Have you ever heard of a green swimming pool?

Probably, right?

But we don’t mean the green algae kind of pool.

We mean the kind of pool that is eco-friendly and energy efficient. Ever heard of one of those?

No? Maybe?

Well, let’s talk about those quickly. An eco-friendly pool, also called natural swimming pool is a one hundred percent chemical free ecosystem made up of plants that help keep the water clean.

While a chemical free pool is a wonderful concept, we are not here to learn about those. Regular swimming pools need sanitization and can never be one hundred percent eco-friendly. BUT we are here to show you how you can make your regular pool more sustainable, using less chlorine, while saving some money down the road.

Let’s dive in.

What is Chlorine and Why Are People Looking For Alternatives

Chlorine is the most widely used sanitizer in the pool industry. It comes in different forms, liquid, tablets, granules, and powder. The Environmental Protection Agency has recognized it as a primary sanitizer because it is the most reliable method for killing bacteria. In small amounts, chlorine is safe and commonly used in water purification.

So, as you can see the amount of chlorine in your pool is actually less than the allowance for drinking water.

Now you probably wonder, so what’s the problem?

Although Chlorine is an essential component that keeps people safe, there are a variety of reasons why people want to switch to alternative sanitizing methods. Let’s take a closer look at some of the problems that can be associated with chlorine.

Chlorine Odor

People often complain about that strong chlorine smell coming from their pool. Thinking that there is too much chlorine in the water because of the odor is actually one of the biggest misconceptions about swimming pools.

Chlorine odor is actually a byproduct of another chemical called chloramines. Chloramines are formed when free chlorine binds to body waste (sweat, urine, etc.). This process is referred to as off-gassing which occurs when the pool water is not properly balanced.

This is why swimming pools always ask you to shower and wash off body oil before going swimming.

Chlorine Off-Gassing

Chlorine off gassing goes hand in hand with chlorine odor. The biggest concern surrounding chlorine are the potential health risks associated with the chemical gas.

As mentioned above the toxic vapors released can stem from the formation of chloramines. This can be particularly dangerous in indoor swimming pools without proper ventilation.

Off-gassing also occurs if chlorine isn’t stored or handled properly. You should never mix chlorine with other chemicals and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Residual Chlorine and Skin Irritation

Chloramines are also the reason a strong chlorine smell remains on your body and hair after getting out of the pool. Swimmers call this residual chlorine.

It is the chloramine that bonds with your body’s protein causing discoloration of the hair, as well as skin drying and irritation. The best way to minimize side effects is by limiting the exposure to chlorine and showering immediately after swimming.

If you don’t really know what you are doing it is very easy to think you can just add a bunch of chlorine and your pool will be sanitized. Adding too much chlorine is very easy and as we learned above can have adverse effects on our skin, hair, and respiratory system.

For people who don’t want to run into the risk of over chlorinating, an alternative system might be a better solution.

Sunlight Breaks Down Chlorine

If you have been a pool owner for some time you are probably familiar with the fact that ultraviolet light breaks down chlorine in the pool.

This means you need to take some additional steps to slow down that process - such steps include using a stabilizer like cyanuric acid to keep chlorine in the pool longer, a solar cover to protect chlorine from the sun and evaporation, and only shocking the pool at night so it sanitizes before the sun can break it down.

These processes are known as managing chlorine demand . They add some additional care requirements to lower maintenance expenses.

The chlorine shortage has been an ongoing challenge for pool companies as well as pool owners and a major reason for using alternative sanitizing systems.

Now you know more about chlorine and the problems associated with it. Although we can’t help you get a one hundred percent eco-friendly above ground pool, let's talk about some chlorine alternatives for pools. All of them can help lower the demand and save you some money down the road.

1. Alternative Pool Systems

Over the past couple of years people have been looking for different ways to lower their chlorine consumption. The chlorine shortage in 2021 has left pool owners struggling to sanitize their pools and it looks like this shortage will continue throughout the 2022 season.

Others may want to switch simply because they don’t like chlorine or they are trying to lower their maintenance cost. Whether you have a new pool or an existing one it is not too late to make the switch. Here are several different pool systems that either help achieve a chlorine free pool or at least reduce the demand significantly.

Copper System

Copper-based pool systems such as Pristine Blue is one of many alternative ways to keep your water clean. Unlike a salt chlorinator, ozonator or UV sterilizer, it does not include any costly hardware that needs to be installed.

Ozone and UV Systems

Ozone and UV Systems are secondary disinfection systems that are still relatively new to the industry when compared to chlorine and salt pools. Together they eliminate chlorine-resistant microorganisms at a kill rate of 99.9 percent reducing chlorine levels by 50 to 90 percent, making them popular chlorine alternatives for pools.

Both units have been EPA approved as sanitization methods and are environmentally friendly. As a standalone system, ozonators still work by killing off bacteria but it needs another chemical to break down the dead bacteria.

Mineral Systems

Like Ozonators and UV sterilizers, Mineral Systems act as a secondary disinfection system to help reduce chlorine consumption in your pool or spa. Copper and Silver are used to combat both algae and bacterial growth. Combatting bacteria completely requires either some chlorine or some chlorine free shock.

2. Energy Efficient Pool Equipment

We just explored some great alternative pool systems that help reduce or eliminate the need for Chlorine. Now let’s take a look at what you can do to make your newly converted pool even “greener” by using energy-efficient pool equipment.

Pool Pumps

Pool pumps are considered the heart of your pool’s circulation system and one of the biggest energy users in your home. In fact, they can use three times more electricity than your refrigerator. There are three types of pumps, single-speed, dual-speed, and variable-speed pumps.

Single-Speed Pumps

Single-speed pumps as the name suggests operate at a single RPM and make up the majority of pool pumps in the U.S. They are the cheapest initial investment compared to the other two types of pumps. However, they are the least energy-efficient units, therefore costing you more year after year.

Dual-Speed Pumps

Dual-Speed Pumps, also called two-speed pumps use an induction motor and offer more flexibility as they can operate at two different RPM’s, typically 3,450 rpm (full speed) or 1,725 RPM (half speed) also reducing energy consumption.

Variable Speed Pumps

Variable-Speed Pumps are the top energy saver for your pool with an energy efficiency of 90 percent. These energy efficient pool pumps offer a lot more flexibility because you have complete control over the speed ranging from 600 rpm to 3,450 rpm.

Although Variable-Speed Pumps are more expensive initially you will end up saving more money over time.

Energy Star Certified Pool Pumps

With all three pool pumps in mind not all pumps are created equal. Some pumps are individually certified by the Department of Energy to be more energy efficient.

Energy Star Certified pool pumps run quieter and prolong the life of your pool’s filtration system and save you more money over its lifetime.

Pool Filters

If pool pumps are the heart of your system, pool filters are considered the kidney. They help filter out all the impurities in the water, such as debris, bacteria, and algae. Without a filter swimming pool water would not be able to remain clear.

Just as with pool pumps there are three different types of pool filters. Let’s take a look at them, how they work, and which one is the most eco-friendly pool filter.

Sand Filter

Sand filters as the name suggests is a unit that is filled with a special sand mixture that is designed to catch small particles the size of 20 microns. They are relatively inexpensive and low maintenance. Instead of dismantling the unit to clean the filter you do a simple backwash and the dirt gets pushed out.

D.E. Filters

D.E. Filters use a cartridge unit that gets coated with Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.), which are fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms. This pool filter is best for filtering out the smallest particles (2-5 microns). You can get D.E. filters either with a backwash function or without it. If you get it without it you need to take the filter apart for cleaning.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters are a little more work because you have to remove the filter and hose it down. However, they are the greenest of the three filters because they don’t require backwashing in which you lose gallons of water and chemicals. Cartridge pool filters also filter out debris as small as 10 microns, smaller than sand filters.

The best pool filter is the one that fits best into your budget and maintenance requirements. If you want a filter that is most efficient and more environmentally friendly though, the cartridge filter will be the best choice.

Pool Heaters

Gas Heater

Natural gas and propane heaters are both considered green energy sources. However, there are some differences between the two.

For one, natural gas releases less carbon dioxide than propane, helping to reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses produced. It is also a much less expensive gas.

Propane on the other hand produces more energy per cubic foot and uses less fuel making it more energy efficient.

Whichever gas heater you choose, consider the amount of BTUs the heater produces. If you have a large pool you don’t want to buy a small heater to save money initially just to have to increase the amount of BTUs to heat the pool.

Solar Heater

Similar to solar panels solar heaters use the sun as its energy source to heat the water. There are different types of heaters, some are long panels leaning against a frame or your pool while others are small hoses curling through a dome like feature.

You do need to run the pool pump to push the water through the solar heater but it requires much less energy than a conventional pool heater.

Heat Pump

Heat pumps work similarly to a solar heater but instead of using the sun the heater uses the warm air. A fan pulls in the warm air from the atmosphere and transfers it through a multistep process into the cold water, warming it and returning it back into the pool.

The downside of a heat pump is that it requires a minimum of 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit to run efficiently. This makes the heater less ideal for cooler climate regions.

Comparing the three heaters side by side all of them are considered energy efficient. Choosing one should be based on the climate you live in, your budget, the size of your pool, and the gas prices.

Other Ways to Manage Your Heating Cost

Pool Cover

If you have an inground pool consider investing in an electric pool cover, it will help preserve the heat and prevent water evaporation. It also helps to keep debris out of your pool.

Solar Cover

A solar cover can not only preserve the heat but make your pool warmer as the sun’s energy is captured through the cover and transferred into the pool water. This can also prevent some debris from falling in and sinking to the bottom of your pool.

Liquid Blanket

A liquid blanket or liquid cover essentially works the same way as a solar cover. It typically contains a mixture of alcohol and calcium hydroxide that forms a film on top of your pool water. It is completely safe for swimming.

3. Sustainable Pool Maintenance

Energy-efficient pool equipment can be a huge relief to your wallet but it doesn’t end there. There is more you can do to run your pool as efficiently as possible with sustainable pool maintenance.

Properly Balanced Pool Water

A properly balanced pool will save you a lot of money in chemicals. We often see pool owners sporadically add chemicals to their pool as they see fit. Two things happen with this process.

One, if the pool is not properly balanced it can be harmful to the swimmer as bacteria has the opportunity to grow.

Two, every time you let your pool go you have to add more chemicals. We recommend testing your water regularly and bringing water samples to your local pool store if you have trouble controlling ranges.

Order and Timing of Pool Chemicals Are Important

Another factor is the time chemicals are added. UV rays can burn off chlorine. Therefore it is best to add it at night time. Other chemicals have to be added in a certain order for them to work their magic. If you are unsure about how to properly balance your pool water ask your local pool professional for guidance.

Pool Pump Run Time

Your pool pump is the biggest energy consumer as we previously discovered but you have to run your pump in order for the water to circulate and keep it clean.

So what is the most efficient run time?

It depends!

How long and when you should run your pump varies based on your water volume (how many gallons of pool water), the pump itself, and the climate you live in.

On average a pool pump should be running 8 hours a day. If you have a small pool with an oversized pump you might be able to reduce pump running time by 2 hours. Alternatively if you have a dual speed or variable-speed pump you can reduce the horse power to make it run more efficiently.

Water Evaporation And Heat Loss

Both phenomena occur in pool water at any given time, which can add to your energy consumption. When water evaporates you have to top it off with new water as well as chemicals. Running a heater for hours is not an optimal solution especially for your wallet. Solar blankets or covers are a great way to keep the heat in the water and prevent it from evaporating.

Regularly Check for Leaks

Always keep an eye on your water level to ensure there are no leaks. While losing water can also be due to evaporation you want to make sure you don’t have any holes in your liner that’s causing the dropdown.

Having to add water to your pool can drastically impact your water, electric and chemical bill as adding new water will impact your water balance and cool your heated water.

4. How to Run Your Pool More Efficiently with an Automation Systems

How to Open an Above Ground Pool in 10 Steps

Spring is a glorious time of the year, especially if you own a swimming pool. As a pool owner you have probably been waiting for this time since you closed your pool for winter. If this is your first spring as a new pool owner, you might be wondering how to open an above ground pool.

Before we start jumping into the step-by-step process let’s quickly go over the best time to open your pool and the things you need to make this job easier.

When is the Best Time to Open An Above Ground Pool

If you live in a four-season climate area like New England, you have to close your above ground pool for winter . When Spring comes new pool owners often ask when they can open their pool. If you open it early you have the additional cost of maintenance before it’s warm enough to swim.

On the other hand, if you wait too long your pool cover traps heat, algae will start growing in your pool, and it will be more expensive to clear up the water. A good rule of thumb to open a pool in the Spring is when temperatures are consistently above 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Things You Need to Open an Above Ground Pool

A sump pump
A skimmer net and pole
A pool brush
A vacuum head
A vacuum plate
A vacuum hose
Start-up chemicals
Some basic tools (nut driver and phillips head)

Now that you have everything you need let’s get started.

1. Clear Off Leaves and Water from Your Winter Cover

Over the winter a lot of debris and water collects on top of your winter cover. Before you can open your pool, you need to pump the water off your cover and remove the leaves.

Attach your vacuum hose to the sump pump and submerge it in the water on your cover. While the water is pumping out start fishing out some of the leaves with the skimmer net.

2. Remove the Winter Cover

Now that you have cleared off your cover it’s time to pull it off your pool. You might want to ask a friend to help you with this but if you remove it by yourself, we suggest you use some clips.

Try to avoid letting the cover fall in to prevent debris and dirt from dropping into your pool water. If you used a pool pillow remove that as well, deflate it, and store it with your cover.

Once the cover is removed lay it out, rinse it off and let it try completely before storing it. When storing your pool cover make sure to keep it in a dry space that mice don’t have access to.

3. Install Your Equipment

Reinstall Pump and Filter Plugs

Before connecting the equipment open the pump lid and remove all the plugs stored during winter. There should be two plugs, a small plug for the pump and a bigger plug for the filter. If you have a sand filter, there should be an eye glass that connects to the side of the filter. Reinstall all the plugs.

Suggestion: Using some O-ring lube helps prevent the rubber rings from cracking and prevent leakage.

Connect Your Pump and Filter

Now you are ready to connect your pool equipment. The skimmer gets connected to the pump using a filter hose. The pool pump connects to the filter either via another filter hose or through a direct connection.

If you have a heater or chlorinator, connect it between the filter and return. If you don’t have either just simply connect the filter to the return.

Next connect your grounding wire to the pump. The grounding wire is a small metal wire that wraps around your pool and keeps you safe while swimming.

4. Remove Winterizing Plates and Plugs

Before you get too excited and hit the on switch on your pump, remove all the winterizing plates and plugs on the pool skimmer and return so the water can flow through.

5. Add Water If Needed

This step is necessary if your pool water is below the skimmer. Using your garden hose add water till it reaches the middle of the skimmer.

6. Start Up Your Pool System

Time to start up your system! After everything is installed, turn on your pump and check to make sure water is pulling through into the filter and gets pushed out of the return.

Sometimes pumps need to be primed if it doesn’t pull the pool water through. You can tell by looking through the clear pump lid. If the water is swooshing around and the pump basket is not completely filled with water, it needs to be primed.

All you do is shut off the system, open the pump lid and add water to the pump using a garden hose or a bucket. Then close the lid and start up the system again. This should help the pump pull water through.

If you have a diatomaceous earth (D.E.) filter you have to add some D.E. powder to the skimmer to help coat the filter. The label on the filter will tell you how much to add.

Important: Leave your pump running for 24 hours when opening your pool and make sure to clean the filter often as a lot of debris will be filtered out in the beginning.

And voila! Your pool is running! But wait the job is not done yet.

7. Clean Your Pool

Now that your pool is running it’s time to clean it because chances are your pool is not crystal clear. Maybe it’s even completely green or brown and you can’t see the bottom. If that’s the case, try to scoop and clean as best as you can.

Wait till the shock has cleared up enough for you to see the bottom. Then use the skimmer net to scoop some of the debris before vacuuming it manually. Hold off on brushing yet, you will see why in a minute.

8. Reinstall Pool Accessories

If you haven’t done so yet, you can install all your pool accessories such as your pool ladders, steps, diving boards, or whatever else.

9. Add Your Start-Up Chemicals

Finally, it’s time to add your start up chemicals. Add 2lbs of granular shock or 2 gallons of liquid shock per 10,000 gallon of pool water. We recommend shocking the pool before balancing it because if you shock it after it can throw off the balance and you have to balance again.

Also add 1 gallon of algaecide. Once those are added you can then brush the walls and bottom to loosen up all the algae and to help mix the chemicals around.

10. Balancing Your Pool Chemicals

After 24 hours test your pool water to find out what else you need to balance your pool. If you are unsure about how to test and balance your water, you can always bring a sample to your local pool store. They will be able to tell you exactly what you need.

Having too much chlorine in your pool can cause health concerns , like rashes, bouts of asthma, and eye or throat pain. Many pool owners want to do what’s best for their family’s health, while some simply don’t like the smell of it.

Salt Chlorinator

However, a mineral system isn’t effective enough to completely eliminate the need for chlorine. You will still need to maintain chlorine levels close to 0.5 PPM but it’s easy to maintain, better for your pool, and your body.

UV Systems

UV systems are another great alternative to traditional chlorine pools. It works by using ultra-violet rays that eliminates pathogens and other forms of bacteria while the water passes through the system.

1. Keep Your Water Properly Balanced

How to Select the Right Above Ground Pool Pump

When selecting an above ground pool you also need to choose the proper pool equipment. Matching a specific above ground pool pump is a relatively easy process when you know how they work.

The right pool pump is an investment that can affect your energy costs and the ease of maintaining your pool. It’s worth taking the time to find the best pump that fits your pool’s needs.

Here are the three considerations you need to choose the best above ground pool pump.

Choose the Speed

Pool pumps come in three-speed settings: single speed, dual speed, or variable speed pumps.

Single-speed is exactly as it sounds. It’s a pump that runs continuously at one speed, no matter what. This makes it rather inefficient since it’s going at full power even when no one uses the pool. Some states like Arizona or California have banned the installation of new single-speed pumps years ago due to their inefficiency.

A dual speed pump has a low speed or a high speed. The high speed runs at the same rate as a single-speed pump and is great for vacuuming or balancing the pool. The lower speed saves energy when used the rest of the time and can ultimately lower pool pumps energy cost.

A variable speed pump works entirely different from the other two. Most single-speed pumps with a few exceptions will no longer be available. The new regulation will take effect starting July 19th, 2021.

Horsepower

Above ground pools typically require less horsepower because they’re smaller and often gravity fed. The horsepower will affect water currents and the rate at which water circulates within the pool.

You need a pump that’s strong enough to circulate the water in your pool, but not too strong or it can create irregular water flows. It’s also inefficient and will end up costing more to run.

If you opt for a sand filter for your filtration system , anything stronger than 1.5 horsepower will end up sending sand back into your pool. For most standard above ground pools, 1 horsepower is strong enough to steadily run your pool.

Pool Size

Finally, you need to know how big your pool is, and how many gallons per minute your pool pump will pump.

To do this, you need to calculate the volume of your pool. Luckily Swim University’s Pool Calculator makes it easy by giving you a reference chart. Once you know the volume, divide by 8 to find out how many gallons per hour your pump needs to move. Typically your pool pump runs 8 to 10 hours per day, so using both numbers should give you a good range.

Volume/8 hours = gallons per hour (GPH)

Now divide GPH by 60 since pool pumps are usually labeled in gallons per minute (GPM)

You need a pump that can filter through your pool’s entire volume every single day. If you’re looking at pumps that can filter either above or below your pool’s volume, always choose the pump that can move more water. This will help keep your pool crystal clear.

What’s the Best Above Ground Pool Filter: Sand, Cartridge, or D.E. Filter

No matter how well you maintain your pool’s chemical balance and sanitizer levels, unless your pool has a filter, all the debris and contaminants swim with you in the water.

But each filter is different when it comes to cost, maintenance, and materials involved. What works best for one pool may not necessarily work best for another. A lot of that comes down to personal preference and how you will maintain your filter.

Here’s the guide to the best above ground pool filters and how to pick the right one for you.

What You Need to Know About Debris

Chlorine or other alternative sanitizing chemicals you use in your pool kill the bacteria and algae that exist within it. But it just kills them, it doesn’t take them out of the water.

Your pool’s filter is there to get rid of the debris and keep your water from becoming cloudy. But here’s the thing, bacteria is really, really tiny. Like 2 microns tiny. How big is a micron? Well, for reference, the width of one human hair is about 70 to 200 microns.

So the only way to actually pull dead bacteria out of the water is with a very fine filter. Make sure you maintain proper sanitizing levels in your pool to kill the bacteria living there.

Sand Filters

Sand filters are relatively inexpensive for pool filters. They’re low maintenance as you don’t have to take them apart for cleaning, but the sand needs to be replaced every 5 to 7 years. They only filter particles as fine as 20 microns.

Most sand filters have a pressure gauge on the outside of the filter, which will help determine when it’s time to clean the filter. You should backwash the filter once every 2 weeks at a minimum or you can cause the sand to become compacted. This will make it difficult to do a good backwash and may result in quick plugging of the filter or breakage of the laterals.

While many pool owners backwash their filters weekly as part of routine maintenance, you should backwash anytime the gauge reads 5 PSI above the original start-up pressure or when the pressure coming from the return is weak.

Using a sand filter means that you will likely need to replace some water in your pool after backwashing the filter. As a result, you will have to add chemicals to the pool to rebalance more often than for a cartridge filter. This can be significant for smaller above ground pools.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters are inexpensive and easy to maintain. These filters are cleaned by removing the filter and spraying it down with a hose. You only need to do this when the filter pressure increases by 5 PSI or the return pressure is weak.

Cartridge filters are also more efficient than sand filters - they can filter out particles as small as 10 microns.

However, you need to deep clean cartridge filters once or twice a year. Most cartridge filters only last about two to three years, but some can last twice as long.

Cartridge filters work well and reduce the need for rebalancing your pool. However, cleaning can be a bit of a pain. This is an issue in the spring for some people, as cartridges may need to be cleaned daily or every other day at startup.

D.E. Filters

D.E. stands for diatomaceous earth. It’s made with powdered, fossilized, tiny aquatic creatures that are specially heat-treated to work with the filter.

D.E. filters are slightly more expensive when it comes to maintenance. But they’re the only filters that can filter out debris as small as 5 microns. So if you’re particularly worried about keeping your pool clean, consider a D.E. filter.

Keep in mind some cities and provinces may have laws against backwashing or particular methods of cleaning a D.E. filter. Improperly disposed, D.E. filters can clog storm drains and suffocate fish eggs. Make sure to check your municipal codes.

D.E. filters come in two major types; those with backwash capabilities, and those without. The ones without offer all the benefits of a cartridge filter, plus improved filtration and are easier to clean than a cartridge.

Those with backwash capabilities offer all the ease of cleaning that comes with a sand filter but with much better efficiency in cleaning and less need to backwash - only clean when pressure rises. D.E. filters last many years without needing repairs or replacement, usually 10 or more.

Some above ground pool manufacturers also offer built-in stairs, which is a nice addition since you will never have to deal with putting them in and taking them out. Keep in mind that both custom features will increase your cost by $2,000 - $6,000.

Depending on the space and the landscape of your backyard you will want to choose the right size and type when buying an above ground pool. If you are unsure, you can always ask your local pool store for advice.

Pool Sanitation System

Most customers should give thought to the type of pool sanitation they want to use before buying an above ground pool. Aluminum

Aluminum is a lightweight but rugged material. It does not rust per say but is prone to oxidation. Aluminum above ground pools are more expensive than steel pools.

Resin Frame

Resin above ground pools, also known as hybrids, are made of resin and other materials, such as steel or aluminum. Since resin is plastic, a pool cannot be made 100% out of this material but it is often a big component.

It offers a big advantage over an all-steel or aluminum above ground pool because it is resistant to rust and corrosion. This makes it a better choice for saltwater pools. It also doesn’t get as hot to the touch. Resin frame above ground pools are slightly more expensive than steel pools.

Wooden

Above ground pools made of wood are the most durable material and structurally sound. We once had a customer, whose wooden above ground pool was hit by a tree and the result was zero damage to the structure of the pool. Above ground pools constructed from wood have the advantage of being rust and corrosion-resistant.

These pools are visually more aesthetically pleasing compared to the other above ground pools. The wooden walled pools tend to be more expensive than the other pool types as they are of greater quality.

4. Installation

Another factor adding to the price of an above ground pool is the installation. If you are not a DIYer knowing how to install an above ground pool, then it is best to leave it up to the pool professionals.

Most pool warranties are contingent on proper installation of the pool, so consult the warranty before installation to ensure you don’t void your warranty.

Tip: Be wary of pool companies that offer free installations, unless it is a special promo offer.

5. Equipment

You got your pool, now you need to figure out what equipment you want to add to run your whole system.

Pumps

There are three types of pool pumps ; single speed, dual speed, and variable speed pumps.

Single Speed Pumps are the most widely used pumps in above ground pools. They are the least expensive but also the least energy efficient.

Dual Speed Pumps offer a little more flexibility as you can choose from two-speed settings; high and low.

Variable Speed Pumps are relatively new to the above ground pool industry but inground pools have been using them for several years. They allow you complete control over the speed making it the most energy-efficient pump. While it is the most expensive pool pump it will save you money in the long run.

Filters

Just like there are three types of pumps there are also three types of pool filters .

Sand Filters are budget-friendly and are the easiest to clean. They require weekly to biweekly cleaning. Sometimes this filter requires additional chemical help to remove smaller particles that cause the water to be cloudy.

Higher up in price are Cartridge Filters . They catch smaller particles and are coined the most energy-efficient pool filter because they allow more water to pass through. While cartridge filters are better than sand at clearing cloudy water, cleaning the cartridge tends to be labor intensive and time consuming. Fortunately, cartridges do not need to be cleaned as frequently as sand filters. Cartridge filters are better for smaller pools.

Last but not least are DE Filters . This type of filter is able to catch the smallest sized particles of the three. In dirty pools this filter will plug the quickest and require cleaning frequently, but you won’t need to add more chemicals to help clear the water. Every time you clean or backwash you need to add DE powder back into the filter.

All three filters perform well. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The decision comes down to price and preferences.

6. Accessories

After you have made all your important decisions you can add a variety of accessories to your pool. Some accessories might be part of different pool packages but if they aren’t you might want to think ahead.

For Maintenance

You need to regularly maintain your pool whether you hire a pool professional or not you still want to have the basics. A pool brush and leaf skimmer net to maintain clean surfaces. A vacuum to remove debris and keep your filter cleaner. There are manual and automatic cleaners.

For Closing

If you live in a cold-weather area or don’t have a heater you will want to close your above ground pool for winter . This requires either a standard winter pool cover or a safety cover. Some people like to add a leaf net to make leaf removal in the Fall and Spring easier.

Additional

To get in and out of your pool you will need to buy a pool ladder or stairs. If you like to keep your pool water warmer you can add a solar cover that lays on top of the water. Or you could get a heater. Heated pools will almost always get more and longer usage.

The most important question every pool buyer asks: What does an above ground pool cost? The answer unfortunately depends on multiple variables. Above ground pool pricing varies based on pool brand, size, material, and equipment. When comparing them to an inground pool though, which can cost anywhere from $25,000 to $85,000 (or more), above ground pools are a much more budget friendly, ranging from $3,000 to $20,000.

Most pool distributors offer different above ground pool packages. Depending on the accessories you add those packages will increase in price. Another important factor that will impact your budgeting is a pool deck. If you are thinking about building a pool deck you should consider that a deck around the whole pool will most likely cost you more than the actual pool.

Low Water Level During Above Ground Pool Opening - Why and How to Prevent It

If you are a new pool owner in New England, either you or a pool professional closed your above ground pool for the coldest season of the year.

All winter long you stare at the hibernating construction of where your glistening blue water used to be last summer.

Spring comes around, and you can’t wait to take off the pool cover.

But wait, the water level is really low. While your first reaction might be to panic and look for a leak, it might not be as bad as you think.

Here’s what you need to know when you notice a low water level during your above ground pool opening.

How Low is Too Low?

Throughout your pool’s life, it’s normal to have to add more water.

Water gets lost. It evaporates gets splashed over the sides, or it’s displaced. So don’t panic when the water levels are lower than you expect.

When your pool equipment is attached and properly functioning, you should never let the water level drop below the skimmer line.

Doing so will allow the motor to suck in air instead of water, which can burn up the motor and destroy your equipment.

During winter, your water level is dropped to below the skimmer line to avoid some water displacement but still high enough to prevent the walls from pulling in.

Above ground pools rely on the pressure of the water to help the pool and liner keep their shape and structure.

W ithout the water, your pool can collapse in on itself, pop out of the ground, or tear the liner.

It May Not Be Your Liner

In winter, it’s more common for water to be displaced than for the pool to have a leak.

Displacement happens when snow, ice, water, or other debris are allowed to sit on your pool cover (Solid covers - not mesh covers).

The weight of the debris pushes the water out from beneath your pool cover and over the sides of the pool, causing the water level to drop by springtime.

Let’s say you closed your pool in early October, and don’t open until mid-May. During that time we receive an average of 21 inches of rain.

I f you didn’t remove any of that water you could have displaced between 12 and 21 inches of water from your pool (depending on if you use a skimmer plate or other skimmer plug).

Prevent Water Displacement Throughout the Winter

You can prevent water displacement by keeping your pool cover free of water, snow, ice, and debris.

Clean off your pool cover as often as you shovel the sidewalk, and check it regularly to make sure it’s not being weighed down.

Once the weather is getting warmer and we start seeing increased rainfall towards late March, early April, start pumping your water off regularly.

Alternatively, you can use a mesh cover. They’re lighter and let the water drain through instead of sitting on top.

However, mesh covers are typically more expensive than other pool cover options and aren’t as effective at keeping your pool clean. The water gets dirtier faster. Since sunlight can pass through, you’ll likely see more algae growth come springtime.

Look for Leaks

If you don’t think displacement caused your water loss, it’s time to look for leaks. You can test for leaks by filling your pool and marking the waterline.

L et it sit for 24 to 48 hours and come back. If the water has significantly dropped, there’s probably a leak. If you’re not sure, give it a few more days.

How to Close Your Above Ground Pool for Winter

Summer is over and Winter is coming. It is time to think about winterizing your above ground pool. If you have never closed an above ground pool before, we will guide you through the steps.

Why Do I Have to Winterize My Pool?

While not everyone has to winterize their pools, people living in colder areas with harsh winters want to close their pools properly. This not only prolongs the life of the pool but also allows for less work during pool opening in the spring.

During Fall leaves and other debris fall into the pool, settling on the bottom. This can cause staining of the liner and the decomposing leaves throw off the water balance eventually leading to algae growth. Come spring this means scooping, scooping, scooping on top of vacuuming, and a heavy dose of shock and algaecide.

Why create so much work when you can simply avoid it by closing your pool properly?!

How to Winterize My Pool?

In order to winterize your pool, you want to ensure it is clean, clear, and balanced. Skim the top and vacuum up all the debris off of the bottom. Next, it is time to winterize your pump, filter, and heater if you use one. Depending on your filter and set up steps may vary.

Step 1 Lower Water Level Down to the Bottom Edge of the Skimmer

If you use safety or a mesh cover, lower the water level to 1 foot under the skimmer.

Turn off the pump. Then set your filter so that it is discharging out of the pool. This will vary, depending on the type of filter you have.

I) If you have a multiport valve set it to backwash or waste

II) If you don’t have a multiport valve open the drain on your filter. You may want to connect a hose to the drain to direct water away from where you are working.

Turn the pump back on and start pumping water out of your pool. Make sure to stop using your pump as soon as you hear it sucking air. To lower the rest of the water to the desired level, you can either use the Siphon Method, attach a backwash hose to the return or use a submersible pump and hose.

Step 2 Insert Plugs, Plates or Gizzmos

Replace the eyeball in the return with a winterizing plug. Cover up the skimmer. We recommend using a steel plate to not only help keep ice out of the skimmer but also minimize water loss over the winter. It also helps to prevent ice damage to the wall and skimmer.

S ome people use what is called a Gizzmo in the skimmer but check with the skimmer manufacturer before doing so, as we find many above ground skimmers crack from this method. Another method uses a special face plate on the skimmer, which allows you to use a plastic lid that snaps in place. Most pool professionals prefer the stainless steel plate method.

Step 3 Winterize Your Pump and Filter System

Disconnect the hoses from the skimmer, return, pump, and filter.

Open all the drain plugs on the pump and filter to let all water drain out of the system.

Open up the pump, remove the pump basket to rinse off any leftover debris, bugs, or leaves. Then use the pump basket as storage for all plugs. This will ensure that you have everything together when you open your pool come spring.

For Cartridge or DE Filters; open the filter and remove the cartridge or DE grid. Clean the filter and store it in a clean dry place (make sure not to allow mice to make their nests there.) Now you can either put the pump and filter housing in the shed or cover it for the winter.

For sand filters, place the multiport valve on the “Winter/Closed” position. If yours doesn’t have one, push down on the handle and leave the valve halfway between any two settings. Now you should remove the pump and bring it inside for the winter or a shed so the pump doesn’t get hit directly by the elements.

We do not recommend moving sand filters as you can damage the filter internals (lateral assembly). It is best to try and cover the sand filter for the duration of the Winter. You can use heavy-duty contractor’s bags.

Step 4 Winterize Other Equipment or Piping

If you have a heater or any piping that is underground you need to winterize those by blowing out the lines with a blower and adding a small amount of Antifreeze to the lines. This will prevent pipes from bursting due to freezing water.

Step 5 Winter Pillow

You are almost finished. Now it is time to blow up your winterizing pillow and drop it into the center of your pool. Use either the Pool Pillow Pal to attach it to your cover or attach two strings to each side of the pillow and tie it to the top rail of your pool.

Why do I need a pool pillow?

A pool pillow helps to compensate for the expansion of ice and instead of pushing against your walls, it will exert pressure inward towards the pillow. Additionally, it helps to push water on top of the cover to the edge of the pool, making it easier to pump it off and remove leaves.

Step 6 Putting on the Winter Cover

Winter covers are necessary to keep dirt, leaves, and other debris out of your pool. Pull the pool cover/safety cover over your pool. The standard pool cover is selected based on pool size (see below) and is secured via a cable and winch. Once the cable is wound through the grommets of the cover and attached to the winch, twist the winch as tight as you can.

The safety cover is attached to professionally installed anchors.

How Big Should My Winter Cover Be?

We find that a pool cover that is 4 feet larger than the pool size fits best. So if you have a 24’ Round pool the actual cover size should be 28’. This gives you extra slack to account for the water level, the pillow, and your top rail. If you are installing a standard cover you should not be pulling it tight like a trampoline.

Now your pool is closed and you finally don’t have to worry about your pool for the winter! Not so fast!

Step 7 Maintaining My Pool During Winter/Early Spring

Why Do I Have to Maintain My Pool in The Winter?

During the winter leaves, debris, and snow will accumulate on top of your cover. This will cause pool water to get pushed out of the pool, which can significantly lower your water levels and potentially cause damage to your pool wall and winter cover.

We want to avoid this by removing leaves, snow, and water from the cover in the fall. To remove leaves it's best to use a skimmer net or leaf net. A leaf net helps to easily remove leaves from the cover.

Next, you want to pump off rainwater regularly to keep the weight off of the cover. Once it starts snowing remove snow from the cover as well. When the snow melts in the spring be sure to pump off the cover again. All these proactive steps can help you open your pool with ease in the Spring.
